The ZJX ARTCC is currently seeking one or more volunteers to assist in updating its sector files. There are two distinct opportunities: (1) assist with the update of airspace data (fixes, boundaries, STARs, DPs, etc.); and, (2) add additional airport ramp/taxiway/runway ground boundaries. The descriptions for each volunteer opportunity are below. If you are interested, please contact Robert Burkhead. To send me an e-mail, click on the Staff link, scroll to the bottom, and click on my name. You will be taken to an e-mail form. Please include "Sector File Engineer" in the subject line of your e-mail. You may also e-mail me directly at "robert [*at*] zjxartcc [*dot*] org". Job Description and Requirements: Sector File Engineer - Airspace Data
Creating and updating airspace data in sector files involves seeking airspace data from real-world sources such as the FAA and ARINC's USFIF and from neighboring ARTCC sector files, identifying data relevant to ZJX that needs to be updated, and applying those updates to our sector files in both the ASRC ".sct" and VRC ".sct2" formats. We are seeking one volunteer for this position, however additional candidates may be considered if work can be coordinated between multiple individuals. The successful candidate: - Is familiar with basic airspace and navaid concepts and their uses, such as:
- intersections,
- navaids (VORs, VORTACs, TACANs, NDBs, etc.),
- precision and non-precision approach aids (ILSs, LDAs, Localizers, etc.),
- airport locations and runway end locations,
- low and high airways,
- oceanic, enroute, tracon and airport airspaces and their boundaries,
- standard arrivals, standard departures,
- etc.
- Is familiar with geospatial coordinate systems (basic latitude, longitude and altitude, WGS84 and other reference systems, the ability to perform translations and calculations if necessary).
- Is familiar with most major air traffic control clients used on the VATSIM network (ASRC, VRC, EuroScope, etc.), and is willing to install all clients on their system for development and testing activities.
- Has the ability to read, interpret and understand file format specifications, and the ability to exactly follow those specifications in creating sector files.
- Is familiar with ZJX's SOPs and LOAs, and is capable of adhering to those standards and agreements in the development of sector files.
- Can balance the desire for exactly implementing real-world air traffic control concepts with the realities of the VATSIM simulated environment and the needs of ZJX controllers of all skill levels.
In addition, automation of certain aspects of sector file creation is a desirable goal. Candidates with experience in PHP, JavaScript and SQL are encouraged to apply.
Job Description and Requirements: Sector File Engineer - Ground Boundaries Creating and updating ground boundaries in sector files involves translating airport taxiway, ramp, building and runway outlines into boundaries in sector files. Largely, this is accomplished by using a combination of Microsoft Flight Simulator and GndMaker to "outline" an airport. Anyone may volunteer to create ground boundaries for one or more airports. Candidates are strongly encouraged to contact Robert Burkhead prior to starting an airport, to ensure that the airport is not being completed by someone else. The successful candidate: - Owns a copy of an appropriate version of Microsoft Flight Simulator.
- Is willing to install GndMaker, and all of its required components (e.g., FSUIPC).
- Is willing to dedicate time to accurately and precisely outlining one or more airports with GndMaker.
The current sector file contains outlines for several airports already. Those created by ZJX member Leonard Jungck are excellent examples of the desired accuracy and precision desired for this job.
