ZJX Mentor Policy

Purpose:

To define the roles of mentors here at ZJX and define limitations of Mentors. Mentors also must be familiar with the duties outlined in section 1-2-10 of the ARTCC Operating Policy.

Cancellation:

This document will remain in effect until it is updated, superseded, or cancelled by written confirmation of the ZJX ATM.

Mentor Responsibilities:

Mentors are responsible for providing the following to students:

  • Provide on the job training and monitoring to students through the Approach Certification.
  • Provide feedback to students regarding progress.
  • Maintain at least five (5) hours of online time each month either in a controller or mentor function
  • Recommend students to Instructors for promotion and certification testing.
  • Insert training notes for each student trained in their individual training records.

Mentoring tools:

Mentors may use any tools they deem necessary to help a student with training. Mentors are reminded that they should be able to cite some part of the 7110.65 when giving constructive criticism to student. Several of the tools available to Mentors include:

  • VATSIM's Sweatbox server
  • ACSim
  • TWRTrainer
  • Jacksonville ARTCC's Teamspeak server

Mentors should be thoroughly familiar with the operations of Sweatbox and any additional programs necessary to train using the Sweatbox server. Mentors shall utilize one of the OJT rooms located on the ZJX Teamspeak server for voice communications when using the Sweatbox server. This is so that the LIVEATC servers are available for those controllers and aircraft on the regular servers.

Mentors should contact the Training Administrator, Air Traffic Manager or another experienced Instructor for assistance in learning how to use all available software.

Mentor Reports:

Mentors should submit a training report each month to the Training Administrator including:

  • Students the mentor has trained for the month.
  • Positions trained on, with the corresponding students name.
  • The time spent training each student.
  • The topics covered.
  • Any recommendations for promotions or certification testing.

Mentor Call Signs

Mentors monitoring or assisting a student shall either:

  • Use a call-sign in the form ZJX_CI_MTR, where CI is replaced with the mentor's controller operating initials, or
  • Use a call-sign in the form XXX_M_YYY, where XXX and YYY match the code and designator in use by the student. This form of the call-sign shall be used by the mentor if he is either actively controlling the position with an observing student, or if the mentor is set up to take over for the student on the active frequency.
  • Use a special staff call-sign assigned to him by the Jacksonville ATM.
Example:

If the mentor's controller operating initials is "DS", then the mentor may use the call-sign ZJX_DS_MTR.

Example:

If the position being staffed by the student is Jacksonville Delivery, and the mentor is set up to take over for the student on the active frequency, then the call-sign shall be JAX_M_DEL.
